Mayon Volcano in Bicol spewed ashes

Mayon volcano had spewed ashes and rocks early today, Tuesday morning, May 7, 2013. Local residents and mountaineers are advised to take extra caution.

Mayon Volcano eruption 2013

According to experts, the eruption reported earlier today is called, Phreatic explosion. The steam-driven eruption occurs when magma heats ground or surface water. The extreme temperature of the magma causes near-instantaneous evaporation to steam, resulting in an explosion of steam, water, ash, rock, and volcanic bombs.
While Mayon is on “Alert 0″, Salceda said they advise the residents to do the following:

1. Extra care and caution in conducting human activity in the 6-km PDZ – this includes ATV, trail runs, picnics etc.
2. We reiterate that Mayon Volcano mountaineering (or volcanoeering) is subject to prior notification to PTCAO/APSEMO/DOT
Update 1: GMA News quoted OCD Bicol as saying there are around 20 mountain climbers on Mt Mayon when phreatic explosion occured. Injuries reported.
Update 2: DZRH reports via reporter Jun Alegre that three individuals were killed while two others were injured as of this posting.
Update 3: News reports say four individuals were reported killed, three of them are foreigners while one is a tour guide.

McDonalds To Celebrate Australian Day By Embracing The Nickname Australians Have Given-Maccas

From ‘Mickey D’s’ up in the United States, this US giant-fastfood chain, McDonalds is set once again to take a leap in their PR stunt by changing its famous golden arches signage to ‘Maccas’ in the Land Down Under.

McDonalds is rebadging certain stores in Australia and adapting its Aussie name, Maccas as part of the brand’s integrated Australia Day campaign and also used to launch the new Aussie Tastes menu this year.

“The restaurants will change their name for a month, replacing their signage with the customised ‘Maccas’ logo as a reflection of Australia’s embrace of the fast food brand over the four decades since its introduction to the country in 1971. Australia is the only nation in the world that routinely uses the abbreviated nickname of ‘Maccas’ when referring the McDonald’s restaurants.”

“Chief marketing officer for McDonald’s Australia Mark Lollback claims that changing the signage of several McDonald’s restaurants as a part of the organisation’s Australia Day celebrations is the best way to acknowledge the colloquial manner in which most Australians refer to the international fast food empire.”

Happy Australia Day!

GDC Europe and GamesCom 2012 Record-Breaking Attendance

GDC Europe 2012 has concluded last week with a record breaking attendance of more than 2100 game professionals. GDC Europe is a much more intimate event for game developers and gamers as compared to GamesCom massive record attendee count of 275,000 people.

According to Gamasutra, the breakdown includes over 100 speakers, 65+ exhibitors and sponsors, and nearly 300 media representatives. To find out what happened during the event, we invite you to visit their GDC Europe 2012 dedicated page.

GamesCom on the other hand reached a little over 275,000 attendees which is approximately the same as 2011. According to event organizers, the absence of Microsoft and Nintendo plus locking the tickets at a set of number prevented Koelnmesse’s overcapacity this year.

Joystiq.com has a list of some of the most interesting trivia about GamesCom 2012 including:

- Croissants consumed at hotel breakfast: 35 (2011: 27).
- Liters of multivitamin juice consumed: 6 (2011: 4).
- Number of times “excess” was experienced: 0.
- Number of times we were confused as working for the French magazine: 1 (2011: 2).
- Number of horse images in our hotel room: 10. Same hotel room as last year.
- Number of times a homeless guy asked us for for cash: 1 (2011: 12; 2010: 0; 2009: 8).
To find out their complete list of official and unofficial stats, checkout their website
Meanwhile, it has been a wonderful experience for RDI having been able to attend these two events in Cologne, Germany last week. We have posted some photos from the events on Facebook. Feel free to check them out. See you all in 2013!

Simple Tips For Attending A Conference

Just 4 days until the biggest gaming event takes place in Cologne Germany and with so many amazing companies exhibiting and attending GDC Europe plus the exciting new titles coming out at GamesCom this year, we have so much to look forward to next week! Are you coming prepared?

For those who will be present at the events, there is a different feeling of excitement you all have in common: anxiety. What should you bring? What can you expect?

To help you prepare for a variety of networking scenarios and out-of-office challenges, here are some tips and must-haves on your to-do-list that get you going at the conferences:

1. Mobile phone

Got to admit, you’re not leaving your cellphone, it’s even more valuable on business trips. Aside from this precious gadget, don’t forget to pack the mobile cord and an extra battery just in case there’s no time or access to an outlet to charge up.

2. Business card

This is an obvious one- always have a few extra cards for yourself and it is highly recommended to bring extra cards from your colleagues, boss, and the key people you work with. One of the best ways to network is thru ‘referral partners’. Also, make sure to have a QR code business card that other people would just scan with their phone.
3. Breath mints

Business card is something to pass along but not the strong odor from the mouth. Carry breath mints to chew particularly after meals and at a regular intervals. Don’t meet people with your breath less than desirable. Use mints not gum to avoid the chewing during the meeting.
4. Hand sanitizer

Carrying an antibacterial gel is a necessity given all the people we’ll be meeting and new hands we’ll be shaking. It is strongly advised to use a little stealth because we don’t want to offend our new associates.
5. Extra clothes and pair of shoes

Make sure to have comfortable clothes and shoes for walking around during the day and a slightly more appropriate for important dinners with clients.
6. Laptop/Tablet

Okay, back to gadgets. Be it an iPad, Android tablet, Windows tablet or what have you, make sure to have one with you. Make sure you have your important presentations, fact sheets and company portfolio saved. Don’t rely on what the business center provides. Save yourself the hassle.
7. WiFi card

Bring internet cards that are usually compatible with both Apple and Windows operating systems. A wireless card often provides access to more than one WiFi-enabled device.
8. Easy-to-carry tools of your trade

Invest in a few portable versions of the tools you mostly use. Bring along usb flash drive, camera, laser pointer (if you need to give presentations), multi-charger, even the ancient pen-and-paper will come in handy.
9. Cash money

You’ll never know who you would have to treat for lunch or dinner while at the event.
10. Courage

Surely, nobody bites. Meet people, network, network, network, remember them and build your business!

Miss anything? Oh yes, always travel light.  See you in Cologne, Germany for GDC Europe and GamesCom 2012!
